There is no simple solution to controlling healthcare costs.
The ability of your organization to control costs is in part achieved by requesting competitive proposals, changing carriers,
negotiating renewal reductions, encouraging in-network plan utilization, and shifting costs to employees (i.e., changing plan designs,
increasing employee contributions).
The key to reducing costs in the long run is made possible by:
- Analyzing your claims utilization to identify trends or specific areas of concern within the employee population.
- Encouraging employees and dependents to have routine annual physicals.
- Conducting annual health fairs and other wellness programs.
- Promoting the carrier's 24-hour nurse advice line and disease management programs.
- Creating a work environment that promotes good health.
The win-win formula for controlling costs is to develop creative ways to positively influence employee behavior without any adverse impact on your employees.
Here are two examples of the services we provide:
Health Fairs
Annual health fairs are a very effective way for your organization to promote health awareness and encourage individuals to assume
responsibility for their own health.
According to a study by the Institute for the Future and the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, lifestyle behaviors contribute to half of an individual's health status, followed by environment (20%),
genetics (20%), and access to care (10%). A related study indicates that improved care management can reduce healthcare costs as much as 16%.
The key advantages of health fairs are to:
- Conduct health screenings to identify health conditions and/or potential risk factors.
- Educate employees about the early detection of medical conditions.
- Teach employees about healthy lifestyle options.
- Provide a forum to learn more about the company's healthcare options.
- Show your employees that you care about their health and well-being.
If a health screening identifies a medical condition, the employee can work with their healthcare provider to implement an effective treatment
plan to cure the illness or at least minimize the risk of future complications.
The bottom line:
Having healthier employees will reduce healthcare costs and improve lost work time on the job.
